An air conditioner for a motor vehicle has a variable displacement compressor and a control device. The compressor compresses a refrigerant by a motor vehicle-mounted power source for driving the vehicle and regulates a discharge refrigerant amount. When the fuel consumption of the power source for driving the vehicle starts to decline, the control device sets a second target temperature that is higher by a predetermined amount than a previously set first target temperature and regulates the discharge refrigerant amount based on the second target temperature.
