PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the influence of electrostatic charges which may constitute obstruction when sheets in a pile are to be separated. SOLUTION: Sheets 12 and 14 of recording media held in the pile are separated and supplied to a business machine. The trailing edge of the uppermost sheet 12 is heaved from the mating trailing edge of the second sheet 12 subsequent. At least one tape 32 is inserted into the gap formed there, and the uppermost sheet 12 is separated by this tape from the next sheet 14. This decreases the friction between the two sheets 12 and 14 when the uppermost one 12 is withdrawn, which suppresses to the minimum the electrostatic charges to be generated in the sheets 12 and 14 by the friction.
