<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the initial adjusting method for registering the peripheries of engraving cylinder (C1-Cn) of printing units of a rotary multicolor printing press continuously arranged in the order of the decided work. <P>SOLUTION: An angular registering mark (CR) is arranged on each one of cylinders (C1-Cn) and the position of the registering mark is measured to the zero reference and the characteristics of angular printing marks (RM and CM) on engraving positions are related with each one of the cylinders (C1-Cn). At first, data on executing work are stored. Then, the length of a web between two printing points of two printing units of two continuous ones of engraving cylinders (C1-Cn) for the decided work is calculated. By calculating an angular index through employing the remainder of the division of this length by the peripheral length of the engraving cylinder arranged in the downstream to the moving direction of the web, each angular displacement of each of the engraving cylinders (C2-Cn) is indexed to the reference cylinder (C1) according to the work. Next, each of the cylinders (C1-Cn) is moved in the order named to each of their indexed positions and then separated from a transmission line (MS).
