PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal oxide or metal sulfide nano particle fluorophor which has excellent dispersibility, is safe, little affects environments, and is easily functionalized, and to provide a dispersion thereof. SOLUTION: This metal oxide or metal sulfide nano particle fluorophor whose surface is modified with a surface-modifying agent is characterized in that the half-value width of emitted light is 50 to 200 nm and the surface-modifying agent is a compound represented by the general formula [I] : M-(R)<SB>4</SB>[I] (M is Si or Ti atom; R groups are each identically or differently an organic group, but at least one of the R groups is a group having reactivity with a hydrophilic molecule).
