The method involves having cylinders arranged with a crankshaft with fuel injected into the cylinders by injectors. A determination is made for a pre-determined number of characteristic values for each cylinder (2 to 5) from a measured fuel process characteristic. A determination is made for the same number from the individual cylinders assigned fuel process parameters pi from the characteristic values. Comparisons of the actual parameter values are made with given target parameter values as well as the actual parameter values for each cylinder. The determination of the pre-determined number from the individual cylinders is assigned a fuel process parameter from the characteristic values by a characteristic diagram, which shows the dependence of a certain fuel process parameter on the associated characteristic value for each cylinder with a defined engine condition.
