A staple is punched out by a driver (10) from a driver unit to paper to be stapled, and legs (S1) of the staple penetrate through the paper. A clincher (1, 11) of a stapler clinches the penetrated legs (S1) on the back face side of the paper when the clincher engages the legs (S1). The clincher (1, 11) has surfaces inwardly guiding the legs (11), and ridges (8, 9, 14) engaging the legs (S1) are formed parallel to one another in the surfaces.
