The present invention comprises a user interface system comprising an interface that generates logical input for one of a group of commands to be applied to an object. The group of commands comprises a minimally necessary group of commands. In one embodiment, a four-button schema is applied to a single physical object (1302). The minimally necessary group of commands comprises ENTER, OUT, UP, and DOWN commands. Rocking the object (1302) to the left correlates to an ENTER command while rocking to the right corresponds to an OUT command. Rolling the object in an upward motion corresponds to the UP command and rolling the object in a downward motion corresponds to the DOWN command. The interface system can be implemented in a plurality of devices and the minimally necessary group of commands can comprise other commands such as PREV and NEXT commands.
