PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a convenient memory element, in which a memory that has a very-wide I/O width and a plurality of buffer memories that have a wide I/O width similar to that of the memory are connected on a chip, to be used in a higher performance network system. SOLUTION: A semiconductor memory device has a memory array that is structured by stacking a plurality of middle memory column units MM, each of which is composed of a unit of a column unit M group that is composed of a plurality of adjacent column units and a Y decoder means K that is connected to the column unit M group. Each of the column units M in the memory array shares a X decoder means K. For individual unit of the Y decoder means K in each of the middle memory column units MM, a plurality of buffer means e, which are connected with input and output terminals DOia and DIia, are connected through an opening and closing means D.
