POLYNUCLEOTIDES FOR THE DETECTION OF ESCHERICHIA COLI

Polynucleotide primers and probes for the specific amplification and detection of E. coli in samples are provided. The polynucleotide primers and probes are targeted to the E. coli prpP and/or ykgM genes and can detect a wide range of E. coli strains. The primers and probes can be used in real time diagnostic assays for rapid detection of E. coli in a variety of situations and are capable of distinguishing E. coli from Shigella spp. Kits comprising the primers and probes are also provided.
