PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device capable of shifting to arc discharge without going out at start of lighting. SOLUTION: The high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device comprises a feeder system, and a high-pressure discharge lamp 10 sealed with mercury of 0.15 mg/mm<SP>3</SP>or more. It is characterized in that in a smoothing circuit 2, a small capacity capacitor Cx and a starting performance improving circuit 21 are connected in parallel with each other in an output end of a chopper circuit 1, and a large capacity capacitor C1 is connected in series with a parallel circuit of a resistor R1, a switch SW, and a diode D1.
