PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rolling element, keeping an initial rolling life even if stored in the air for a long period. SOLUTION: In the rolling element 1 covered with molybdenum disulfide or tungsten disulfide as a solid lubricating film 5, the solid lubricating film 5 is divided into two layers, a boundary layer contains oxygen 5 to 30% atomic concentration, the thickness of the boundary layer is 0.01 to 0.2μm, and the upper layer contains oxygen 3% or less. The upper layer contains argon 0.4% atomic concentration. For example, the rolling element 1 may be a ball, an inner ring or an outer ring as well as a roller 2.
