PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL device having an excellent sealing property against moisture and gas. SOLUTION: An EL element 2 consisting of a anode 3, an organic layer, and a cathode 5 laminated in turn is formed on a transparent glass substrate 1, an absorbent layer 6 consisting of an organic compound identical with an organic compound contained in the organic layer 4 is formed on the surface of the cathode 5 of the EL element, and a protective layer 7 is formed on the surface of the absorbent layer 6. Even if moisture or gas not fully sealed by the protective layer 7 is infiltrated from outside, the moisture or the gas is absorbed by the absorbent layer 6 to prevent the organic layer 4 of the EL element 2 from being damaged.
