PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an area gradation image forming method by which destabilization of a color tone caused when the dot% of a special color or the like changes can be prevented, in a method for forming a proof image whose dot density is variable. SOLUTION: In the area gradation image forming method with a device for independently controlling dot density and dot gain, a silver halide color photosensitive material forming at least a yellow image, a magenta image and a cyan image used in image formation contains black colloidal silver and a change of dot gain at a dot% of 30% to a density change of each color image is in the order of (magenta image)<(cyan image)<(yellow image).
