PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single cylinder hydraulic draft gear equipped with a sealing device preventing working fluid in a cylinder from leaking from a sliding contact part between a lip of an oil seal and an outer peripheral surface of a piston rod outward. SOLUTION: The single cylinder hydraulic draft gear is provided with the closed-end cylindrical cylinder 2, a free piston 3 reciprocatably stored in the cylinder 2 to separate the cylinder 2 inside into a high pressure gas chamber G and an oil chamber O, the piston rod 4 appearing and disappearing from the cylinder 2, a piston 5 to separate the oil chamber O inside into a rod side chamber R and an opposite rod side chamber P connected to the base end of the piston rod 4, and the sealing device 8 comprised of a rod guide 6 arranged in an opening end of the cylinder 2 to guide the piston rod 4, and a sealing member 7 mounted on the upper surface of the rod guide 6 to seal the clearance from the piston rod 4. An oil return passage 18 to return the working fluid leaked from the sliding contact clearance between the rod guide 6 and the piston rod 4 into the sealing member 7 side is installed in the rod guide 6, An oil relief passage 20 communicating from the rod side chamber R into the sealing member 7 side is installed in the rod guide 6.
