PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a good and inexpensive head maintenance device capable of removing deposits on a wiper surely, and to provide an ink jet printer equipped with the head maintenance device. SOLUTION: The head maintenance device 20 comprises a wiper 27 for wiping the nozzle formation plane 2a of a print head 2 reciprocating in the print width direction, and a sub-wiper 30 for scratching deposits on the wipe 27. The wiper 27 can advance/retract freely through a wiper drive mechanism 50 in the direction perpendicular to the reciprocal direction of the print head 2 and touches the nozzle formation plate 2a or separates therefrom. The sub-wiper 30 scratches deposits adhering to the wiper 27 by moving through an arm interlink mechanism 70 in the wiper width direction substantially perpendicular to the moving direction of the wiper 27.
