PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically determine and indicate the state of a defibrillator without human intervention. SOLUTION: In a method for self-testing the portable defibrillator 30 provided with an automatic self-test system 42 including a test signal generator and a defibrillator state indicator, the test system 42 automatically performs functional tests and calibration verification tests in response to periodically generated test signals and indicates the test results visually and audibly.
