Reluctance type motor-generator for driving wheel of road vehicle has control circuit switching coils in sequence for use as motor and as generator

The reluctance machine is connected to a wheel of a road vehicle. It has a rotor with six teeth inside a stator with eight pole pieces with switched coils. The reluctance machine has a control circuit switching the stator coils in sequence for to make the machine act as a motor (m) or as a generator (g). When the driver presses on the accelerator pedal, the signal for desired motor torque (M ist) rises from zero to a positive value (D1), and the vehicle moves forward. When the pedal is released, the motor torque signal goes negative (D2), slowing the vehicle to a halt. Reverse may be selected and a negative torque signal is generated and the vehicle moves backwards.
