PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup system for imaging the license plate of a vehicle ahead.

SOLUTION: This image pickup system is provided with a template holding part for holding the template image of a license plate, a camera for picking up an image ahead of a vehicle, a license plate recognizing part for matching the image picked-up by the camera with the template image held by the template holding part to recognize the license plate in the image picked up by the camera, a reference license plate holding part for holding the image of the license plate recognized by the license plate recognizing part as a reference license plate image and a license plate re-recognizing part for matching the image picked-up by the camera with the reference license plate image held by the reference license plate holding part to recognize the license plate in the image picked-up by the camera again.
