<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an occupant protecting device capable of preventing lowering of absorbing efficiency of energy applied to an occupant. <P>SOLUTION: This occupant protecting device 1 absorbs secondary collision energy applied to the occupant when the occupant collides with a vehicle inside component positioned in front of a seat in collision of the vehicle. The occupant protecting device 1 estimates vehicle collision first, and pulls a seat belt 21. At this time, a winding sensor detects a pulling amount of the seat belt 21, and transmits the information to an ECU 12. The ECU 12 detects an attitude of an upper part of the body of the occupant from the pulling amount of the seat belt 21, and adjusts the absorbing amount of the secondary collision energy applied to the occupant in accordance with the attitude change.
