PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization separation element optimum for a liquid crystal projector or the like, the element having a wide wavelength range as the entire visible light region and wide angle characteristics so that the element can be used with a small F number. SOLUTION: The polarizing separation element comprises a polarization separation layer comprising a plurality of layers having structural birefringent, disposed between two optical members, wherein the layers having structural birefringent are layered with the polarization directions indicating the higher refractive index alternately arranged in an almost orthogonal directions between adjacent layers.
