PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which enables the capacity of a storage part for storing information on position of paper in the image forming apparatus to become lower than ever before. SOLUTION: When it is determined as the result of density detection that the density is changed, the number of notches of an encoder sheet, which is counted by an encoder sensor, is stored in a resist part 100 as a storage part. The counted number stored in the resist part is used as the information on the position of the paper; and a position to start recording on the paper in the direction of a main scanning line, and a position to finish the recording on the paper are determined from the counted number. In this way, the position of the paper can be identified by making the resist part 100 store only the number of the notches of the encoder sheet, which is read by the encoder sensor when the density is changed. Thus, the capacity of the resist part can be reduced, and the cost of an inkjet printer can be reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
