<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell system, which is simply constituted, capable of accurately acquiring the temperature of a current fuel cell and of immediately raising the temperature when the fuel cell is started or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The fuel cell system comprises a coolant passage for circulating coolant to cool the fuel cell, and a coolant supplying means for supplying the coolant to the fuel cell. Further, the fuel cell system comprises an alternat supply control means, which controls the coolant supplying means so as to alternately supply the coolant from both sides of the fuel cell. The alternate supply control means controls the coolant supplying means so that the quantity of the coolant to be supplied from one side of the fuel cell and the quantity of the coolant to be supplied from the other become substantially equal. Then, the alternate supply means controls the coolant supply means so that the coolant does not make one round in the coolant passage. As a result, because the fuel cell system alternately supplies the coolant to the fuel cell by the same amount, it will not continuously supply low-temperature coolant to the fuel cell.
