PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer as a water-soluble thickener, exerting sufficiently satisfiable usability and having high stability and safety if a polymer having acrylamide alkylsulfonic acid units in its skeleton is compounded in cosmetics which units are used as a water-soluble thickener. SOLUTION: The water-soluble thickener is obtained by copolymerizing 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid or a salt thereof, hydroxyethylacrylamide and a crosslinkable monomer, or further neutralizing the obtained copolymer with an alkaline chemical.
