Shark liver oil is vacuum distilled to give a residue which when hydrolysed by lipase of Ricinus seeds and further vacuum distilled yields a concentrate containing fatty acid esters of glycerol ethers. The latter may be saponified with KOH and the unsaponifiable fraction extracted with ether. A product having a high (85% w/w) content of free glycerol ethers may be obtained from the fraction after removal of ether and vacuum steam-stripping of the residue.ALSO:An internally-administrable pharmaceutical preparation in dosage unit form comprises at least one glycerol ether of the formula CH2OH, CHOH, CH2OR wherein R is a C14-26 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, or an ester thereof, together with a diluent or carrier. Preferred glycerol ethers are those known as batyl, chimyl, and selachyl alcohols and glycerol a -monoaliphatic ethers wherein the radical R contains 16C atoms and one double bond. The esters may be mono- or di-esters and are preferably derived from naturally occurring saturated or unsaturated fatty acids. Such esters may be derived from various fish liver oils. The preparations have a wide spectrum of physiological activity, including anti-infective properties, the ability to alleviate psychotic symptoms, and growth-stimulating activity, particularly of various kinds of blood cells. |
