PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display an image by required colors at usual time and to improve the visibility of an image of a person or the like when surroundings are bright. SOLUTION: Portable information equipment comprises an image signal processing circuit 12 for converting an image signal into respective R, G and B gradation signals on the basis of a prescribed gradation characteristic and outputting respective gradation signals; a display panel 5 for displaying an image on the basis of the outputs from the video signal processing circuit 12; and a photosensor 6 for detecting brightness around the display panel 5. The image signal processing circuit 12 has a first gradation characteristic in which the rate of prescribed luminance to maximum luminance is small in an intermediate gradation area and a second gradation characteristic in which the rate of the prescribed luminance to the maximum luminance is large, converts an image signal on the basis of the first gradation characteristic at usual time, and when the photosensor 6 detects prescribed brightness or more, converts the image signal on the basis of the second gradation characteristic.
