Vinyl chloride is produced by the incomplete thermal cracking of 1,2-dichloroethane at 450 DEG to 650 DEG C. and at 8 to 40 atmospheres absolute, in the absence of catalysts, the gaseous effluent from the cracking zone (i.e. vinyl chloride, hydrogen chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane and by-products) being partially condensed and subjected to a first distillation stage in which hydrogen chloride is distilled off and subjected to a second distillation stage to recover the vinyl chloride, the residue from the second distillation being further distilled to give a sump product containing high-boiling impurities and a distillate comprising 1,2-dichloroethane and low-boiling impurities, the distillate being mixed with fresh 1,2-dichloroethane and recycled to the cracking zone. |
