The invention concerns a variable display for road signs with a range of prism inserts (5) in line, which are swiveling on a drive shaft (12) driven by a motor. The prism surfaces, which are facing outwards, display one of a number of possible road signs. The prism sign is equipped with a resetting device, which resets the prism inserts (5) to a pre-determined position in case of a power failure. The variable display device according to invention is characterized by the fact that the resetting device is a mechanical energy storing mechanism.
