The unit comprises the extra-corporal blood circuit (5A) incorporating the first chamber (3) of a dialyzer (1) or filter divided into two chambers (3, 4) by a membrane (2) and a fluid system including the second chamber (4). A supply duct (11) conveying the fluid substitute is fitted with a pump (22). The pump (22) is switched on and off and the pressure inside the duct (11) downstream of the filter (1) checked under each condition. The difference in the pressure levels can be used as a reference for an evaluation of the state of the fluid.
