An automotive supercharger includes a blower wheel (2), which is situated, in use, in the inlet duct of an automotive engine that is connected to a shaft (4) and a turbine wheel (6), which is also connected to the shaft (4) and is situated, in use, in the exhaust duct of the engine. The shaft (4) is also connected to one shaft of a three branch differential comprising an epicyclic gear train. A second shaft of the differential is connected to the rotor (28) of an electric motor/generator unit, the electrical connections of the stator (30) of which are connected, in use, to a battery via a controller arranged to control the electrical power flow between the battery and the stator. The third shaft of the differential is connected to a mechanical input shaft, which is connected, in use, to be rotated by the engine. |
