The method involves reading a logic signal into a programmable logic circuit (31) by a clocked data reading device and mapping onto a time pattern in the logic circuit, where the logic signal is received from a receiver. Instantaneous values of the logic signal are stored in logic units of the logic circuit associated with time windows of the time pattern corresponding to a clock pulse of the data reading device. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for distance measurement by determining a pulse transit time comprising a transmitter for transmission of pulsed electromagnetic radiation.
