An electrical adapter has a plug 302 and an adapter member 306, joined by a cable (304). The adapter member contains one or more sockets (3064, Fig 3A), and a mounting portion 3066 which allows the adapter member to be mounted on a corresponding mounting end 3026 of the plug. Thus the adapter can be used as a compact unit when it is not required for the socket to be remote from the plug.
