Provided are an apparatus and a method for overcladding an optical fiber preform rod, which prevent the influx of exterior air into a gap between a heating furnace and a glass tube as well as a gap between the glass tube and a handle tube upon overcladding. The apparatus comprises an optical fiber preform rod(10), which includes a core and a clad, and substantially extends in a straight line to a longitudinal axis; a glass tube(30) having an inner diameter greater than an outer diameter of the preform rod in order to accommodate the preform rod; a vertical rack including a first chuck for fixing the preform rod with a first handle tube and a second chuck for fixing the glass tube with a second handle tube; a cylindrical heating furnace(40) for surrounding the glass tube at a certain clearance and heating an outer surface of the glass tube while relatively shifting along the longitudinal axis of the glass tube; a first sealing unit(80) for sealing a gap between the heating furnace and the glass tube; and a second sealing unit(90) for sealing a gap between the glass tube and the handle tube. |
