The plate, consisting of a background layer (1), a layer (2) carrying alphanumerical or other symbols, and a surface layer (8) e.g. to enhance contrast, readability and/or protection, incorporates an integral electronic module (10) capable of transmitting and/or receiving information to and from the immediate environment, either automatically or by external control. The information can include, for example, messages, warning bleeps, light, radio or sound transmissions, information related to the vehicle's insurance, driver's permit and other coded information that can be received by the police, traffic wardens and automatic counters. It can also be used to warn following vehicles infringing the safe distance and contain vital but non-confidential information such as the driver's blood group.
