Heat exchanger for granular material especially cement production has heat exchanger spheres preheated before contact heating of the material and separation

An improved efficiency heat exchanger system for granular material, e.g. in the production of cement, has heat exchanger spheres preheated in a pre heating stage (10) using exhaust gasses from the calcinations process. The spheres are moved through a heating stage (11) in contact with the granular material followed by a separation stage (12) from where the spheres are returned to the preheating stage and the granular material is passed to the next heating stage. A number of compact heating stages are positioned over each other. The final stage passes the material to a pre-calcification stage (3) and a calcification stage (4).
