PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an approaching object detector capable of exhibiting an excellent electric power consumption saving characteristic without causing any annoyance of a driver and an occupant by detection and notification of an approaching object in response to a vehicle condition. SOLUTION: This approaching object detector is provided with an approaching object detection means 12, which defines the fact that a vehicle 2 is traveling or stopping in a startable condition as an approaching object detection starting condition, starts detection of the approaching object approaching to the vehicle 2 when the approaching object detection starting condition is established, and carries out no detection of the approaching object when the approaching object detection starting condition is not established, and a notification means 5 notifying detection of the approaching object.
