A translating multifocal contact lens (50) made of flexible material has a truncated lower end (22) provided with a forwardly projecting ledge (52), so as to provide a relatively wide surface which engages with the lower eyelid of a wearer. The far and near distance segments (16, 18) may be separated by a straight line (20), so as to superimpose the optical centres and reduce image jump. The rear curvature may be less pronounced at the periphery (22, 24), so as to facilitate translocation.
