The parking assisting system (10) allows the driver make a steering input demand for automatic or assisted parking. The system undertakes a safety check of relevant functions and/or system parameters, and checks at least whether the parking assistant (11) has no error message, whether the steering actuator (13) has no error message, whether the communication between the parking assistant and steering actuator has no error message, and whether an automatic steering engagement is required. The steering input demand is not carried out or interrupted if one these conditions is not fulfilled. An independent claim is included for a method for the assisted or automatic parking of a motor vehicle by means of the proposed parking assisting system.
