Brew malt is mixed with water in a softening apparatus (02) under which a roller arrangement (03) is provided. The roller arrangement has at least two squashing rollers in between which a gap is formed through which the brew malt passes. The ends of the squashing rollers are mounted in eccentric hoops (05) which are operated to adjust the gap between the squashing rollers.
