PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability by shortening the waiting time before completing output in an ink jet recorder. SOLUTION: Waiting time before completing output is shortened by performing print preparatory operation unique to ink jet system, e.g. detection of residual quantity of ink, ink supply from a cartridge to a head, head cleaning (S2-4), and the like, in parallel with preparatory operation, e.g. determination of document size, determination of recording sheet size, determination of the number of copy sheets (S5-7), and the like, when setting of a document is detected (S1).
