PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device in which the Kerr effect is stabilized by lowering the phase transition temperature between the liquid crystal phase and the isotropic phase, and further the drive voltage is lowered. SOLUTION: The display device is equipped with substrates 1, 2, at least one of which is transparent, a medium layer 3 interposed between the substrates 1, 2 and electrodes 4, 5 applying electric field to the medium layer 3, wherein the medium in the medium layer 3 contains a liquid crystalline material, a chiral agent and a non-polar material. As a result, in the medium no drastic structure change will occur, in the vicinity of the phase transition temperature of the liquid crystalline material between the isotropic phase and the liquid crystal phase, and the phase transition temperature lowering effect is brought about. Also the non-polar material weakens mutual constraints among the components of the liquid crystalline material, and as a result, orientation of the liquid crystalline material molecules becomes easier to be changed and the drive voltage lowering effect is concurrently brought about. Consequently, the display element, in which the Kerr effect is stabilized by lowering the phase transition temperature between the liquid crystal phase and the isotropic phase and further the driving voltage is lowered, is realized.
