PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for a piston ring which has sufficient wear resistance without comprising large quantities of expensive metals, further does not wear a piston ring groove, and has excellent cold workability. SOLUTION: The material for a piston ring has a composition comprising, by weight, 0.4 to 0.5% C,≤0.7% Si,≤0.8% Mn, 3.0 to 4.0% Cr, 0.8 to 1.3% Mo, 0.2 to 0.7% V, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
