PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface shape measuring instrument and a surface shape measuring method capable of detecting accurately a distortion on a curved face of a work. SOLUTION: This surface shape measuring instrument/method is provided with a laser displacement meter 17 disposed opposedly to the outer surface of a curved shape in a door panel 51, a Z-axis servo motor 24 for moving the laser displacement meter 17 along a vertical direction with respect to the outer surface of the door panel 51, an X-axis servo motor 22 for moving the laser displacement meter 17 along a lateral direction, and a Y-axis servo motor 26 for moving the laser displacement meter 17 along a direction opposed with the laser displacement meter 17 and the outer surface of the door panel 51, and a CPU 21 controls the Y-axis servo motor 26 to make a distance along a direction opposed with the laser displacement meter 17 and the outer surface of the door panel 51 kept constant.
