Trithioacetals of one of the isomeric general formul <FORM:0645965/IV (b)/1> and <FORM:0645965/IV (b)/2> wherein X is alkyl or aryl and R1 is alkyl or aralkyl are prepared by reacting an aldehyde of the general formula X-CO-CH2-CHO or a tautomer thereof, or a salt of such aldehyde, with an alkyl or aralkyl mercaptan. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a strong acid, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, or phosphoric acid, and of an inert diluent, e.g. diethyl ether. o -Formylacetone trithioacetal is prepared by passing dry HCl gas into sodio formyl acetone covered with ethyl mercaptan and dry ether. o -Formylacetophenone trithioacetal is similarly prepared.
