PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which sharpness adjustment in a transverse direction of a paper sheet can be easily practised, the relaxation of the design tolerance of process cartridges is made possible and the characteristic information intrinsic to the respective process cartridges is stored into an IC chip and is used.

SOLUTION: An IC tag 48 is attached to the process cartridge 20 and the information relating to the clearance spacings in the transverse direction of a paper sheet concerning the clearance spacing d1 between a photoreceptor drum 22 and a charger 24, the clearance spacing d2 between a developing roll and a developer trimming bar, a clearance spacing d3 between the photoreceptor drum and the developing roll and a set distance spacing to apply a nip pressure between the photoreceptor drum and a transfer device is stored therein. A controller 106 acquiring the information through a read/writer 104 converts the information to an amount of adjustment concerning an electrostatic exposure section 110 based on a conversion table 108 and controls an exposure.
