PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the fitting characteristic at the initial stage and brazing characteristic to a header pipe of an inlet or outlet pipe for cooling medium in a heat exchanger. SOLUTION: A fitting hole 10b of the inlet or the outlet pipe 20 for cooling medium is formed on the side face at the reverse side to a cooling medium connecting hole 10a of the header pipe 10, and the input or the output pipe 20 for cooling medium, is inserted into the fitting hole 10b and a pipe expanding tool 30 is inserted into the one end of the inlet or the outlet pipe 20 for cooling medium in the inner part of the header pipe 10. A supporting plate 40 for supporting the pipe expanding tool 30 is inserted through the cooling medium pipe connecting hole 10a, and a compressor 50 by which a bead 20a formed at the one end part of the inlet or the outlet pipe 20 for cooling medium can be press-joined to the outer wall of the header pipe 10, is set and the end part of the inlet or the outlet pipe 20 for cooling medium, is expanded by pushing the pipe expanding tool 30 against the end part of the inlet or the outlet pipe 20 for cooling medium through the supporting plate 40, and the supporting plate 40 and the pipe expanding tool 30 are taken out.
