PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a leader tape with less dropout increase resulting from imprinting of the drive reel and a leader block part caused by long term storage and running under high temperature and to provide a magnetic tape cartridge using the leader tape. SOLUTION: (1) This is a leader tape provided with a coating layer containing powder and a binder on at least one surface of a support. It is characterized in that a center line average surface roughness (Ra) of at least one surface of the leader tape is 10 to 60 nm and depression hardness (DH) is 60 to 140 Kg/mm<SP>2</SP>. (2) In the magnetic tape cartridge in which a single or a plurality of reels on which a magnetic tape is wound are housed rotatably in a cartridge case, the leader tape of (1) is used as a leader tape joined at the tip of the magnetic tape for leading the magnetic tape and being pulled out to a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus.
