PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel polycondensation catalyst that has excellent catalytic activity and gives a high-molecular weight polyester having excellent color tone and transparency in spite of a catalyst free from antimony as a component and to provide a process for producing a polyester using such a polycondensation catalyst. SOLUTION: The catalyst is a polycondensation catalyst for producing a polyester by esterification reaction or transesterification reaction of a dicarboxylic acid or its ester-forming derivative with a glycol, which comprises hydrotalcite.
