PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the operability by changing a method of changing over the vertical and horizontal displays of a liquid crystal display screen according to an operation mode. SOLUTION: The portable telephone has a display frame 1 and an operation frame 2 foldably joined with the display frame 1 through a movable joint 3 composed of a two-axis hinge to make it transit two or more terminal positions. It comprises magnetic sensors 41, 43 for detecting each terminal position, a vertical-horizontal display designator 61 for a user to designate the changeover of the vertical and horizontal standing displays of a liquid crystal display screen 11, and a vertical-horizontal display controller 63 for switching over the vertical and horizontal standing displays of the liquid crystal display screen, on the basis of the terminal position detected in a first operation mode or on the basis of the user's switching designation in a second operation mode, thus changing the method of changing over the vertical and horizontal displays according to the operation mode.
