PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for recording, which generate an index file (IF) for containing file index information divided into the part of a fixed data length and the part of a variable data length to record it in a recording medium, a recording medium and an electronic camera. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a generation means for generating an IF including a plurality of areas having unique identifiers assigned thereto, and a recording means for recording the IF in a recording medium. The generation means divides file attribute information into the first attribute information of a fixed data length and the second attribute information of a variable data length, relates a plurality of first attribute information regarding a plurality of files therewith and a plurality of second attribute information regarding the plurality of first attribute information therewith to store them in a plurality of areas, and collects the areas of fixed data lengths in the plurality of areas as a first area group, and the areas of variable data lengths as a second area group to store them in the IF.
