<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device using a polarizing beam splitter unit, which is improved so that a bright and high-contrast picture can be displayed and an environmental problem can be easily solved. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing beam splitter unit on which primary color light beams modulated by spatial optical modulation elements 24, 25 and 26 are made incident is equipped with reflection type polarizing elements 16, 17 and 18 inclined to the optical axis of the incident light beam and an optical element 21 which is installed on the optical path of luminous flux made incident on the reflection surfaces of the reflection type polarizing elements 16, 17 and 18 and comprises a wedge prism and a cylindrical lens. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
